Day 6 – 01.01.2023 Kayaking

I had slept well despite the swell, but I was curious how many people would come for breakfast. Surprisingly, there were still quite a few there. But as the day went on, the number decreased a bit and the demand for seasickness tablets increased. 😂

After breakfast, we went outside on deck and took some beautiful landscape pictures before we reached Trondheim. Of course, we couldn’t miss the island of Munkholmen. The island lies just outside Trondheim and has a turbulent past. First it was an execution site, then a monastery, then a fortress, then a state prison, then a sea fortress, then a defensive fortress and today it is a well-known excursion destination and museum.

When we arrived in Trondheim, we went on a kayak tour. The bus was waiting for us at the quay in front of the ship. There were only 5 of us. A father with his 2 sons and his daughter and me. They came from Australia and made a tour through the north of Europe. The mother was going on another trip.

The bus took us to a sports ground. There the driver told us that he would pick us up at another place. He drove off and we were standing on the snow-covered sports field and nobody was to be seen far and wide. So we went to look. All the doors were locked and nothing came back when we said hello. After we had no success at the front, we went to look behind the building.

Where is our Guide? 🤔

It had to be here somewhere, because there were 5 bottles of water in the snow. We found him at the very back of the equipment room. He gave us each a suit, shoes and a bag. Then we went into the changing room. Getting dressed was not so easy, but our Guid helped us. We could keep the trousers on under the suit, but the jacket and all the valuables were put in a big waterproof bag. For the mobile phone there was an extra small waterproof bag that we could attach to the suit. It is advisable to put on warm woollen underwear and a warm woollen jumper on top, as the jacket does not fit under the suit.

Equipment

After we had pulled the boats to the water, the guide helped us get in. The father rode with the daughter, the two boys together and I with the guide.

the brave ones who paddled in winter too 😅

In the water, the guide briefly explained what we should watch out for and off we went. We had a beautiful view from the water of the city’s main attractions, the colourful wooden houses at the harbour, Nidaros Cathedral, the old Kristiansten Fortress and the popular Marinen Park.

We were lucky with the weather and the sun was shining and warmed us a bit, but by the end of the tour I was a bit cold. My legs were a bit stiff and it must have looked quite funny climbing out of the kayak. Everyone took their bag of clothes and we changed right there on the shore. A walker asked us in Norwegian if we had had a nice tour. I only answered yes, because unfortunately there was no time for further conversation. Our bus driver waited and pushed a bit, because we were probably a bit late. So we had to hurry with changing. We could just leave the suits lying around. Our guide then put everything away later. A quick thank you to our guide, who did a really good job. We all had a lot of fun. Then we went back to the ship.

Actually, I wanted to take some more photos of the Richard With in such beautiful weather, but there was no time and only enough for 2 photos and then they already called for me. The tailgates were already closed. We were indeed the last ones and were already eagerly awaited. 😅

So we quickly got on board and continued our journey.
