Antarctica – 25.11.2023 – Day 5

After breakfast, I found out that I had won the camping trip. That was a huge surprise. I hugged the member of the expedition team who gave me the note with sheer joy.

I then practised with my camera until lunchtime. I simply photographed the ship and the photo of the ship’s bell turned out best.

After lunch, which was very tasty by the way, we went to the rubber boot distribution. So that not everyone went at the same time, the distribution was organised per group. You could see when it was which group’s turn in the app. When picking up the wellies, it is advisable to take them two sizes smaller than your original shoe size, as they are very large. Of course you could try them on.

Then the wellies were quickly brought into the cabin, because the photo course with Luis was about to begin. The photo course was very well attended. There were tips for mobile phones and cameras.

After the photo course, Lewis showed me a few settings on my camera and then I had to practise straight away. The practical exercise was as follows: Going out on deck and photographing birds, then showing Luis, correcting settings and photographing again. There were lots of birds today. Of course, Luis also explained to me why which setting. Once Luis was happy with my photos, I edited them a little with Tommy in Lightroom. It didn’t take much, but it was mainly about making sure I understood the programme. We were allowed to sit at the table with the expedition team.

While Tommy let me in on the secrets of Lightroom, the crew had a safety drill.

In the end I even got a usable result of one bird. 🙂

Before dinner, however, we were given a briefing for the camping tour. We were shown what to transport with the sledge, how to pitch the tent, how to inflate the air mattress, what equipment we needed and how the mobile toilets worked. There were 2 mobile toilets. One for women and one for men, where you can only do a small business.

Then we were divided into groups of two. A woman from Norway, whom I had previously met on board, asked me if we wanted to spend the night together. I agreed and took the opportunity to improve my Norwegian.

Afterwards we had a delicious 3-course meal for dinner.

  • Starters (top left): Beef tartar, tarragon mayonnaise, rye bread crisp, fried parsley and capers
  • Main (top right): Steamed Cod from west coast of Norway, pan fried summer cabbage, beurre blanc with chives and dill-potatoes
  • Desserts (under in the middle): Norwegian thick-milk pudding from Røros, caramelized hazelnuts, black currants

After dinner, tomorrow’s programme was presented. The route was explained, the schedule for the first cruise (when which group is on) and there was a weather forecast.

Plan for tomorrow

After the WhatsApp status and Instagram story were done, I fell into bed really tired and full of impressions.
