Day 4 – 08.07.2022 – on the road to Gimsøy

on the road

The breakfast buffet at the hotel was very good and there was something for everyone. We enjoyed the breakfast and discussed what we wanted to do today.

First we went to Svolvær, about 115km from Sortland. The sun didn’t show itself today either, but at least it didn’t rain at times and so we were able to take some nice pictures on the way to Svolvær, e.g. of the Turkish blue sea.

In Svolvær we took a stroll through the town, including a shopping tour. Since shopping makes you hungry, we looked for and found a cosy little coffee shop.

With my coffee I ordered a vanilla boller, a typical Norwegian pastry. But it is also known in Germany.

A funny thing happened to us in this coffee. We ordered coffee and cake in textbook fashion and the waitress answered in English. That had never happened to us before. Sure, most of them smiled, but they still spoke Norwegian to us, just slowly and in simple sentences. We continued to speak Norwegian and the waitress spoke English. But we also got what we had ordered.

From Svolvær we continued about 35 km to Gimsøy.

The road got narrower and narrower. When a Dutch car came towards us, I had to work my magic.

Eva said, “We’ll never get past that.”

“Hmm, let’s see. I’m giving it my all. I can’t go any further to the right or I’ll crash into the fence.”

Very, very slowly we approached each other. I don’t know who was sweating more, the woman in the Dutch car or me. But when we passed the side mirrors, she made a sign that meant ‘Phew, you did it’.

“There was maybe just enough room for a thin sheet of paper. Wow, you did a good job.”

“Thanks. I’m glad nothing happened. It was really close,” I replied with relief.

In Gimsøy we looked at the church and took a few pictures before it started to rain heavily again.
