Antarctica – 27.11.2023 -Day 7

We had to get up early again today, as the trip through the Lemaire Canal is a real highlight. Every time the ship pushed an iceberg aside, it cracked loudly. The special thing about this strait is that it feels as if you can touch the icebergs. It was quite windy, as you can see in the picture above right. The snow swirled through the air.

Icebergs in the Lemaire Channel

You can see brown spots on individual icebergs, which is a sign of a penguin colony. Of course we saw lots of penguins.

As we kept pushing icebergs aside, the journey was not so smooth. For this reason, I couldn’t use a tripod. But even if the video is a bit shaky, you can still recognise the penguins.

Breakfast was served after the Lemaire Canal. In the morning, another Zodiac trip was on the programme. This time we went to “Yalour Island”. There was a very strong wind today and the swell was very high as a result. We got quite wet, but the view was worth it. Good rain trousers are therefore recommended.

I even succeeded in photographing a bird on the way. Above left is the enlargement.

It’s really breathtaking travelling through the water with all the icebergs. Sometimes there were small or larger icebergs, but we also saw penguins and seals.

The penguins are so cute even from the Zodiac, as the following video shows.

Back from the Zodiac trip, we went straight to lunch. As the landing on Petermann Island planned for today was delayed due to the weather, I took the opportunity to write my postcards. Some of my friends actually asked for a postcard.

We saw a lot of penguins on Petermann Island. I took a lot of photos and it wasn’t easy for me to choose which ones to include in the blog post.

The weather wasn’t the best, but that didn’t bother us. It was very windy, cold and occasionally it snowed. But the penguins didn’t care about the weather. They were curious to see who was visiting. A distance of five metres from wild animals is mandatory, but the penguins didn’t care. There were a lot of penguins and we took a lot of photos. The photographers helped a lot. So everyone had nice photos of the penguins. The three of us had a great time, as you can see in the photo below left after our return.

As everything was a bit late today, we were also a bit late for dinner, so we missed the meeting for tomorrow. But it was a wonderful day full of impressions with lots of cute penguins. So I fell into bed dead tired.
