Day 6 – 10.09.2022 – Holmvassdam

After a hearty breakfast of bacon and egg, we thought about what I could do today. The plan was to go to the Svartisen glacier at 12:45.

But I still had time until then. Since Virgil was on call, it had to be something nearby so that he could be at work in the required time in case of an emergency. None of his work colleagues had wanted to swap places with him, as nice weather was forecast for this weekend.

He thought for a moment and said:

“I know what. You have to follow me, because we’ll take both cars. Otherwise you won’t make it to the transfer boat in time.”

“Ok. No problem.”

No sooner said than done. I followed him until he stopped. He showed me where to park and then we drove on in his car.

“You can drive straight on from here later and you’ll be there in plenty of time,” he explained.

“Good. Where are we going?”, I wanted to know.

“Wait and see.” was the answer and he grinned.

We drove through a tunnel. Most tunnels in Norway were not tunnels like I am used to. The walls were not so smooth and the lighting was sometimes non-existent. So it was with this tunnel. In this tunnel, there were also many potholes in the road. When a big truck, which had been converted into a camper, came towards us, it was really tight. I was amazed at how calmly and serenely Virgil crossed with him. Ok, he is used to driving here.

After the tunnel, he actually wanted to turn left, but this road was closed due to construction work.

“Ok. I didn’t know that. Then we’ll go straight on. That works too.”, he explained

We continued straight for a while until we stopped at a dam.

From the car park it looked like a normal dam.

“Come on, let’s walk upstairs. There’s a nice view,” Virgil explained.

And he really hadn’t promised too much, and the weather was right, too. The view was really nice and you could see a glacier. I took a few photos and a selfie of us with the glacier in the background 😉 I also took a photo with the technical data.

I wouldn’t have found the dam without Virgil. It was a great idea of his.

After enjoying the view for a while, we went back to the car park. I went to the transfer boat to the Svartisen Glacier and Virgil back home.
